Places to stay

Hello,
I'm researching different areas of the city to stay in, and have only been able to find reviews on thamel. Are there other areas in the city worth considering when choosing accommodations. I like the idea of being near the old city, have some choices with restaurants/cafe, safe is always good, and wouldn't mind being around the "real Nepal". As always thanks for your answers.
