First trip to Amsterdam

I'm going to Amsterdam from May 11 - 17. First trip to Europe, or outside Canada actually. It was a last minute thing as I won an Air Canada voucher that had to be used, so I don't even have a solid plan as to what I want to do. One other person is coming with me; we're both young and looking for fun stuff to do. Any advice for a first-timer? Places we should go, etc.? I was thinking about taking a day trip to Bruges or something, worth it? We'll be staying in the Dorint hotel in Schipol, so taking transit into the city-center will be on the agenda.

From your hotel to Amsterdam's center you must take the train and get off at the Central Station. From there, you can walk until you reach the Dam Square. On your way to the square, you will find restaurants, shops and coffeshops! You can stop for a smoke or to buy a souvenir! Once you reach the Dam Square, you can visit the Royal Palace and the Madame Tussauds Museum, which has wax figures of famous people. If you can walk some more, you can go to the Museum Plein or the Rembrandt Plein. Both have their pros and cons! I would not recommend Brugge! Go to Utrecht if you really want to get outside Amsterdam!
