US airlines super strict about carry-on luggage size?

I normally travel with a backpack that's perhaps a few inches over the limit but in all my years of travel I've never had any trouble or even been hassled or questioned except for one mean TSA lady in Miami last year (but I still managed to carry it on). However, this time I'd like to travel with a suitcase (Buffalo to San Francisco) on US Airways and Delta. The luggage restriction for carry-on is: 14 x 9 x 22 and my suitcase is 18 x 9 x 25 so I'm not over by too much but wondering if I'll be given a hard time and if i should stick with the backpack. Thanks
