NYE in London

My husband and I are in the process of putting together a trip to London for the end of this year. We are wanting to spend Christmas and New Year there. Can anyone tell me what happens in London for New Years Eve? I've always thought what a buzz it would be to see/hear Big Ben strike 12 at midnight on this particular night but other than that are there celebrations on the Thames or somewhere else in the city?

We assumed Paris would go nuts so we went there a couple of years ago for NYE and it was an absolute disaster. I dont think anyone told them it was NYE! Dont want to make the same mistake again.

There was a large crowd in Trafalgar Sq - bottles flying, and people are crushed to approximately 100 000 of the party.
Personally, I advise you to be there. Should be fireworks around the London Eye. New Year's Day is a colorful parade sponsored by the main streets of London.
