    Togo, a West African country on the Gulf of Guinea, is known for its palm-lined shorelines and ridge towns. Koutammakou, occupied by the Batammariba individuals, is a conventional settlement of fortresslike dirt cabins dating to the seventeenth century. In the capital, Lomé, are the multistory Grand Marché bazaar and the Fetish Market, offering conventional charms and cures identifying with the vodun (voodoo) religion.
